Near Aiken, SC at the Savannah River Site, in 1956 Fred Reines and Clyde Cowan detected the neutrino in a Nobel Prize winning experiment - the only work within South Carolina so honored. An event is planned on August 27, 2010 to celebrate, acknowledge and increase the public awareness of this historic scientific experiment. This event will be part of the 175th anniversary of Aiken.
The one day event will have the following:
- 9:30AM Gather at the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, (map) 121 Richland Avenue East, for coffee and doughnuts.
- 10:00AM: In front of theAiken Chamber of Commerce, unveiling of
- a plaque celebrating the event. This plaque is a replica of a original one given by the Atomic Energy Commission to the Savannah River Site.
- a South Carolina Historical Marker authorized by the South Carolina Archives & History Center.
- 1:00PM: The Neutrino: An hour long DVD of a talk with excellent content given by Dr. Clyde Cowan concerning the motivation, prior efforts (including plans to use a fission bomb) and the experiment itself. This DVD is a transcription of a video tape of a lecture given to an undergraduate physics course at the US Naval Academy. Some technical terminology appropriate in an introductory college physics course is used.
- 2:15PM: Reminiscences and Anecdotes: about the experiment by people directly involved with the experiment or the experimenters. Family members will be welcomed to give their memories of their times in Aiken.
- This session is being arranged by Prof. Henry Gurr, Physics Professor Emeritus, University of South Carolina, Aiken. Dr. Gurr was first a graduate student and then a professional colleague for over a decade with Dr. Fred Reines.
If you have a potential contribution to this session, please contact Dr. Gurr at HenryG(AT)Aiken.sc.edu

- 3:00PM: "Neutrinos in Particle Astrophysics and Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay" Following some brief historical remarks, a review of several topics of astrophysics
involving neutrinos will be given. These include the discovery of neutrino oscillations
of atmospheric neutrinos, the solar neutrino puzzle and its resolution, neutrinos in stellar collapse, and neutrino-less double-beta decay.
- The speaker will be Prof. Frank Avignone. Prof. Avignone is the Carolina Endowed Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of South Carolina, the recipient of many distinguished awards, and is currently a leading member of several experiments investigating the properties of the neutrino.
- 3:45PM: "Neutrino Research using Accelerators: A survey of neutrino research using particle acclerators.
- The speaker will be Prof. Sanjib Mishra,Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of South Carolina. Prof. Mishra has won - among many awards - the Michael J. Mungo Distinguished Professor of the Year Award, 2008.
- 4:30PM: Followed by a reception in the foyer of Etherredge Center .
- 6:30PM: A dinner featuring the distinguished key-note speaker, Prof. John Palms. Among Professor Palms' many accolades are
- Distinguished President Emeritus of the University of South Carolina, retired from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the end of the academic year 2006/2007.
- The Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest award for Leadership and Service at Emory University.
- The Radiation Protection Professional of the Year Award (2001).
- Since 1988, Dr. Palms has served on the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Defense Analysis, and as its Chairman since 2002.
- Serves on the Federal Advisory Commission on the Consolidation and Conversion of Defense Research and Development Laboratories, and
- the President's Commission on White House Fellowships.
